Local Guide · Jökulsárlón main car park

Blue ice, by 4x4

A three-hour guided tour with Local Guide that starts at the Jökulsárlón main car park and drives by modified 4x4 to an ice cave or blue ice feature in Breiðamerkurjökull, the glacier above the lagoon. Pick it for a winter trip, when the ice caves are open and the boats are winding down.

Original Ice Cave Tour from Jökulsárlón

About this experience

No boat here, and no cave in the lagoon either: the ice caves are in Breiðamerkurjökull, the outlet glacier of Vatnajökull that feeds Jökulsárlón. You meet at the lagoon's main car park, ride a modified 4x4 to the edge of the ice (ice cave tours from the lagoon drive about 20 to 35 minutes), then walk with the guide. The listing puts the walk at 1 to 5.5 km depending on where this season's feature is. Activity level is easy to moderate; no glacier experience needed.

You might get a cave, a tunnel or a canyon of blue ice. The listing is upfront that the cave location, the route or the whole setup can change at short notice with weather, ice movement or the guide's call, and it includes a visit to an ice cave or blue ice feature depending on safety. If the tour is cancelled you get a full refund. Ice cave tours run in winter only, roughly October to March or April, conditions permitting. Since an ice collapse during a summer tour at Breiðamerkurjökull in August 2024 killed one visitor, caves stay closed from May to September and guide ratios are set.

The minimum age is 10. It is not suitable for people with mobility impairments, and baby carriages are not allowed. Helmet and spikes are provided; wear over-the-ankle hiking boots (rentals available) and a waterproof outer layer. Hotel pickup and food are not included. Parking at Jökulsárlón is the national park's regional fee: 1,110 ISK per car (2026), paid in the Parka app or at the machines, valid until midnight. The lagoon's own boats belong to its boat operator (Jökulsárlón ehf / Glacier Lagoon): amphibian tours run from May to about mid-November and Zodiac tours from May to the end of October, weather and ice permitting (operator's 2026 schedule).

This was an amazing activity and Amelia was an amazing guide. She clearly loves her job and sharing all of her knowledge about and love for Iceland. The blue colors in the cave walls made spectacular photographs.

A one-of-a-kind experience. We did it on the only rainy day of the week during our stay in Iceland [...] the landscape is very striking even in the rain, and waterproof clothing takes care of the rest. [...] The walk is very easy and suitable for everyone.

The best experience I did on Iceland. 100% recommended, it is not a difficult thing to do, just a little windy.
