Fjallsárlón Iceberg Lagoon · Fjallsárlón tour reception

Float with the ice

A guided ice floating session on Fjallsárlón, the smaller glacier lagoon 10 km west of Jökulsárlón: you lie back in the water in a buoyant thermal suit among the ice. Pick it if a boat feels too ordinary and you are a confident swimmer.

Fjallsárlón Ice Floating Tour

About this experience

There is no boat on this one. You go into the lagoon itself. The Fjallsárlón operator fits you with a thermal immersion suit, walks you down to the water (10 to 15 minutes each way over uneven ground), gives a safety briefing, and then you float, supervised by the guide. The whole tour takes about 1.5 hours including dressing; the water part is around 20 to 30 minutes and depends on how you handle the cold. Afterwards you warm up with coffee, tea or hot chocolate at the Frost restaurant.

Limits are strict and listed by the operator: ages 15 to 75, height 150 to 210 cm, weight up to 110 kg, eight guests per guide. GetYourGuide lists it as not suitable for non-swimmers, pregnant women, people with mobility impairments, heart problems or respiratory issues. You must be able to walk on your own and move in the suit. The operator calls it the first ice floating tour in Iceland, and runs it all year.

Where you float changes with the season. In winter it takes place close to the tour reception; in summer at another spot on the lagoon, with transport from the meeting point. Ice and snow vary day to day and the operator does not guarantee them. Fjallsárlón has free parking, toilets and the restaurant on site. This is not on Jökulsárlón: if you want to be on that lagoon, the kayak tour paddles among its icebergs, and the day tour with the boat ride included puts you on the amphibian.

  • Weightless in the water among glacier ice, a guide beside you
  • Small groups: eight guests per guide
  • A hot drink at Frost once you are out of the suit
  • Free parking at Fjallsárlón, 10 minutes' drive from Jökulsárlón
  • Runs all year, so it works after the boats stop

Tips before you book

  • Dress in layers under the suit, with soft gloves and thick socks. You are out in the elements the whole time.
  • Arrive 15 to 30 minutes early. In winter the check-in is at the Frost restaurant, not the summer reception.
  • Check the limits before you book: 150 to 210 cm tall, up to 110 kg, ages 15 to 75.
  • Pair it with Jökulsárlón the same day: the big lagoon is 10 minutes' drive east. Parking at Jökulsárlón is the national park's regional fee: 1,110 ISK per car (2026), paid in the Parka app or at the machines, valid until midnight.
