Ice caves are the winter answer to the boats. They form in the glacier above the lagoon as meltwater carves channels through the ice, and they change every year, so operators scout a new one each season.
Below: when the season runs, where the caves are (not in the lagoon), what changed after 2024, what a tour from the lagoon includes, who can go, and how to fit it into a short winter day.
The quick answer
Ice cave tours run in winter only, roughly October to March or April, conditions permitting. The caves are in Breiðamerkurjökull, the outlet glacier above the lagoon, and tours meet at the Jökulsárlón car park, then drive 20 to 35 minutes by 4x4. Since the fatal collapse in August 2024, caves are shut from May to September, every group goes with a guide, and operators check conditions daily. Minimum ages on the listings run from 5 to 14; the tour on this site starts at 10.
When is ice cave season at Jökulsárlón in 2026 to 2027?
Winter only, roughly October to March or April, conditions permitting. Tours have been running since early October 2026; the national park has not published official dates for the season.
Different sources word the season a little differently, and they all point the same way. The caves stay shut through the summer and open as the cold returns in autumn. The first tours of this winter went out at the start of October: Scott, on another cave tour from the lagoon, wrote on 2 October 2026, "It was the first day of the season".
The end of the season depends on the ice. A mild spell in March can close a cave early; a cold spring can keep one open into April. Book for a date, and let the operator decide which cave, or which blue ice feature, is safe on the day.

Is there an ice cave in Jökulsárlón?
No. The lagoon is open water and icebergs. The caves are in Breiðamerkurjökull, the outlet of Vatnajökull above the lagoon, and tours meet at the Jökulsárlón main car park.
The confusion is understandable: the tours are sold as "from Jökulsárlón" and start beside the ticket office. From there a modified 4x4 or super jeep drives 20 to 35 minutes along tracks towards the glacier, followed by a walk over rough ground to the ice. Some listings describe about 15 minutes on foot; the tour on this site lists a glacier walk of 1 to 5.5 km depending on where the season's cave or blue ice feature is.
Vatnajökull National Park's rangers at Breiðamerkursandur are also responsible for the ice caves in Breiðamerkurjökull. It is not a place to go alone: the caves sit inside a moving glacier, and visits are guided only.

Why are the ice caves only open in winter now?
Because of the accident of August 2024. An ice collapse during a summer ice cave tour at Breiðamerkurjökull killed one visitor, and since 2025 the caves are shut from May to September.
On 25 August 2024 part of the ice collapsed on a tour group at Breiðamerkurjökull; one man died and his partner was injured. The national park then banned all access to ice caves and to any ice formation under an ice roof, extended the ban to 31 October 2024, and brought in new operating contracts from 1 November.
The rules that followed, as Iceland Review and the Reykjavík Grapevine reported in September 2025: no summer cave tours, 8 to 16 guests per guide, daily risk assessments and information shared between operators. Thirty of the 34 companies that applied received park contracts, and the Nature Conservation Agency can limit visitor numbers if crowding requires it. No change to those rules has been announced for this winter.

About three hours: you meet at the main car park, ride a modified 4x4 to the glacier, walk to the ice with a guide, and visit an ice cave or a blue ice feature, depending on what is safe that day.
On the Original Ice Cave Tour the guide, the 4x4, a helmet and spikes are included; hotel pickup, food and drinks are not. Dress warmly in layers with a waterproof shell and over-the-ankle hiking boots, which can be rented. The operator calls the activity level easy to moderate, with no glacier experience needed. If the tour has to change for weather or ice, you can take the alternative, reschedule or get a full refund.
Expect a cave, a tunnel or a canyon of blue ice: the listing is honest that the shape changes. Lisa, in Oct 2026: "The blue colors in the cave walls made spectacular photographs." Alba, the same month: "We were lucky enough to see areas of blue ice!" Parking at the lagoon is 1,110 ISK per car (2026), paid through Parka.

It depends on the tour: minimum ages on the ice cave listings from Jökulsárlón run from 5 to 14. The tour on this site takes ages 10 and up.
A family-friendly tour on GetYourGuide starts at age 5, a few start at 6, one at 7 with a minimum height of 135 cm, several at 8, and others at 10, 12, 13 or 14. The longer the walk on the ice, the higher the age tends to be. Tours from the lagoon cost from about $146 to $279 on GetYourGuide (October 2026), with most three-hour tours between $164 and $176.
Mobility matters as much as age. The walk is over uneven ground and ice, and the tour on this site is not suitable for people with mobility impairments or for baby carriages. With younger children, pick the listing by its age line first and its photos second.
How do you plan an ice cave day in winter?
Give it a full day at the lagoon end of the Ring Road. Drive in daylight if you can, keep a spare day for weather, and pair the cave with Diamond Beach and the lagoon shore.
- Distance. The lagoon is about 370 km from Reykjavík, 4.5 to 5 hours without stops; most cave visitors sleep nearby.
- Daylight. About four hours around the winter solstice. A midday cave slot keeps the walk in the light.
- Weather. Check vedur.is for the forecast, road.is for the roads and safetravel.is for alerts, and leave a travel plan there. Emergency number: 112.
- Reindeer. Several herds winter on the east side of Breiðamerkursandur and may cross the road.
- The rest of the day. The amphibian runs to about mid-November 2026; after that the lagoon is a shore walk, and Diamond Beach is 500 m away. Our Diamond Beach safety post covers the beach.
A day to spare? The Skaftafell blue ice hike on Falljökull is about 45 minutes west, from age 8, with crampons and an axe.
