Reykjavík to the icebergs in a day

The most booked way to reach Jökulsárlón from the capital: a guided bus day along the South Coast, about 1.5 hours at the lagoon, Diamond Beach across the road and Seljalandsfoss on the way home. Pick it if you have no car and want to add the boat ride on the lagoon at booking, so your seat is held.

Jökulsárlón & Diamond Beach Day Tour

About this experience

This is a 14-hour guided bus tour from Reykjavík to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, about 370 km east on Route 1. BusTravel Iceland runs it, and the listing has over 4,000 reviews. The start depends on the option you choose: a central bus stop, or a hotel pickup if you select that option. Breaks come at Hvolsvöllur and at Kirkjubæjarklaustur for lunch, then you get about 1.5 hours at the lagoon with a guided walk, plus Diamond Beach. Dinner is in Vík, and Seljalandsfoss is the last stop before the drive back. Food and drinks are not included.

What happens on the water depends on your booking. The boat ride on Jökulsárlón is an option you select on GetYourGuide, not a standard part of the day, and the listing says to reserve it during the season. Guests who added it in October 2026 describe the amphibian boat, the icebergs up close and seals in the water. The lagoon's boat operator, Jökulsárlón ehf / Glacier Lagoon, runs amphibian tours from May to about mid-November and Zodiac tours from May to the end of October, weather and ice permitting (operator's 2026 schedule). Book without the option and you see the lagoon from the shore, which is free and still the reason most people come.

Children under 6 cannot join, even though the lagoon's own amphibian boat takes all ages. The day is long, and the listing warns it can run over in bad weather, so plan nothing for the evening. Dress for cold on the shore and on the boat in any month. Every tour on this page cancels free up to 24 hours before the start on GetYourGuide.

  • Diamond Beach, where lagoon ice washes up on black sand

  • Hotel pickup in Reykjavík as an option, and wifi on the bus

In one (long) day you get to see a very big piece of this beautiful country. [...] We had more than enough time at each place to enjoy the views, and each step was described in detail. I would also recommend taking a boat in the lagoon.

Tips before you book

  • Add the boat option when you book if your date falls between May and mid-November. With 1.5 hours at the lagoon, a held seat beats queueing at the ticket office.
  • Take the hotel pickup option if you are staying outside the centre. The day starts early and ends late.
  • Bring cash or a card for lunch and dinner, plus snacks and water for the long stretches on the bus.
  • Pack a hat, gloves and a waterproof layer. The lagoon's operator says it is cold on the water even in summer.
  • On Diamond Beach, stay back from the waterline and never climb onto the ice: waves can move the blocks, and the water is ice cold.
