Booking choice: The Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach day tour, from $213 per person. Check dates Tour details
Both boat tours on the lagoon belong to its own operator, Jökulsárlón ehf (Glacier Lagoon). It publishes one schedule for the year, and the 2026 version gives the amphibian a longer season than the Zodiac.
Here is what runs and until when, what it costs in 2026, what happens when the wind or the ice says no, and how to get on a boat in the last weeks. Then the plan for after the boats stop, because the lagoon stays open and worth the drive.
The quick answer
Amphibian tours run from May to about mid-November and Zodiac tours from May to the end of October, weather and ice permitting (operator's 2026 schedule). On 30 October 2026 the amphibian is still running and the Zodiac is in its last days. Tickets are sold at the lagoon and on the operator's own site, not on GetYourGuide; there, the boat comes inside day trips from Reykjavík, included on one and optional on others. A boat cancelled for weather or ice is refunded in full by the operator.
When does the Jökulsárlón boat season start and end in 2026?
Amphibian tours run from May to about mid-November, Zodiac tours from May to the end of October, both weather and ice permitting. Those are the operator's 2026 dates.
The operator lists the amphibian season as May to November and the Zodiac as May to October. Its opening hours put October to 15 November at 10am to 5pm, which is why the amphibian outlasts the Zodiac by a couple of weeks. The exact last sailing of 2026 is not published. The operator adds that it may keep running outside the stated dates if conditions allow, so a quiet, ice-friendly week can stretch things a little.
Next door, the Fjallsárlón operator lists its own Zodiac, the Iceberg Boat Tour, from April to November. It is a separate company on a separate lagoon, 10 km west, with free parking. Kayaking on Jökulsárlón has its own calendar: guest reviews on the kayak listing run into October 2026, and the listing shows which dates are still open.
| Boat | Season | Length | Price | Ages |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amphibian boat (Jökulsárlón) | May to about mid-November 2026 | 30 to 40 min | Adults 7,100 ISK, children 6-12 3,500 ISK, 0-5 free (2026) | All ages |
| Zodiac (Jökulsárlón) | May to the end of October 2026 | About 1 h 15 | Adults 16,600 ISK, children 10-12 8,300 ISK (2026) | From age 10 (and 130 cm tall) |
| Iceberg Boat Tour (Fjallsárlón) | April to November (2026 listing) | About 75 min in all | 11,300 ISK (2026 listing) | From age 5 |
| Kayak on Jökulsárlón | Check the listing for dates | 1.5 h | From $154 on GetYourGuide | From age 14, swimmers only |

Are the boats on Jökulsárlón still running at the end of October 2026?
Yes. The amphibian is running on its October hours, 10am to 5pm, and the Zodiac is in its final days of the season.
Guests on the day trips from Reykjavík are still getting on the water. Reviews posted on 12, 18, 19 and 22 October 2026 for the lagoon day tour mention the amphibian ride and seals, and reviews from 17 and 27 October mention the boat on the day tour that includes it. Regina, in Oct 2026: "We saw seals and sailed through the Jökulsárlón lagoon."
Plan on fewer departures than in July and August, when the amphibian makes about 40 trips a day. The operator says the boats stay "still quite frequent" outside the peak, and the last amphibian leaves about an hour before closing. On a 5pm close, that means being at the ticket office by about 3:30pm to be safe.

Check dates for the day tour with the boat ride includedWhat happens if the boat tour is cancelled for weather or ice?
You get your money back. The operator refunds in full when it cancels for weather or ice on the lagoon, and lets you rebook instead if you prefer.
Boat tours here depend on wind and on how much ice is in the water, and the operator notes that ice conditions change every day with the glacier, the tides and the currents. Late autumn brings more wind. On 29 October 2026 Safetravel posted an alert for gusts up to 30 m/s between Reykjavík and Vík, with the advice to adjust travel plans. No alert named the lagoon itself.
If you cancel a direct booking yourself, the operator's terms give a full refund up to 24 hours before and 50% inside 24 hours; date changes are free by email. Every GetYourGuide trip on this site cancels free up to 24 hours ahead. Wind cancellations often turn into a later slot rather than a lost day. Giorgia, on the kayak tour in Sep 2026: "Initially canceled in the morning due to strong winds, we were able to reschedule for the afternoon, and it was superb!"
How do you book a Jökulsárlón boat tour this late in the season?
Two ways. Buy the amphibian or Zodiac ticket from the operator, at the lagoon or on its own site, or join a day trip from Reykjavík that includes the boat or offers it as an option.
Direct tickets first. An online amphibian booking gets you an e-mailed voucher, not a set time: you swap it at the ticket office for a boarding ticket with a departure. For the last boat of the day, check in at least 30 minutes before it leaves. Zodiac seats are limited per departure and the operator recommends buying online in advance, with check-in 30 minutes before.
On GetYourGuide, the boat sits inside day trips. Only one includes the ticket every time; the others let you add it, or point you to the ticket office at extra cost. Day trips give you about 1 to 1.5 hours at the lagoon, and their minimum age (6 on most) is the one that counts, even though the amphibian itself takes all ages.
| Trip from Reykjavík | The boat | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Boat ride day tour | 30-minute boat ride ticket included | From $294 |
| Lagoon and Diamond Beach day tour | Boat ride as an option you select, in season | From $213 |
| Day trip with the boat option | 40-minute boat cruise as an option, extra fee | From $236 |
| Small-group lagoon and canyon day | Amphibian boat at extra cost | From $229 |
| Two-day South Coast tour | Amphibious boat as an option | From $599 |

Fourteen hours from Reykjavík with hotel pickup, Diamond Beach and the 30-minute boat ride ticket included, so there is nothing to sort out at the lagoon.
Explore the day tour with the boat ride included Tour detailsWhat should you wear on a boat tour in late autumn?
Everything warm you brought. The operator says it is cold on the water even in summer: wear warm layers, a hat, gloves and a waterproof outer layer.
On the amphibian you wear a life jacket over your own clothes, so your layers do the work. The Zodiac adds a flotation suit on top, which helps with wind, but gloves and a hat still matter at speed. Light goes fast now: the operator's hours stop at 5pm, and around the winter solstice the day shrinks to about four hours.
The café by the ticket office is the warm-up stop. It is open 9am to 6pm in October and until at least 5pm in November, with lobster soup (the operator calls it a guest favourite), sandwiches, cakes, Icelandic hot dogs and vegan options. Toilets are in the same building. The lagoon is free to see; Vatnajökull National Park charges parking of 1,110 ISK per car (2026), paid through the Parka app or a machine and valid until midnight.

What can you do at Jökulsárlón after the boats stop?
Plenty, from the shore. Walk to Diamond Beach, take an ice cave tour from the car park (the caves are in Breiðamerkurjökull, not in the lagoon), or float among the ice at Fjallsárlón, which its operator runs all year.
- The shore and the beach. The lagoon area is open all year and rangers are on site every day. Diamond Beach is about 500 m away, under the bridge.
- Ice caves. The 2026 to 2027 season has begun. Tours leave from the main car park by 4x4; read our ice cave season post first.
- Ice floating at Fjallsárlón. Twenty to thirty minutes in a thermal suit among the ice, ages 15 to 75, listed all year by the operator.
- A glacier hike at Skaftafell, about 45 minutes west, on Falljökull with crampons.
Our winter guide covers daylight, driving and what a winter day at the lagoon looks like.

When the boats are parked: a modified 4x4 from the lagoon car park to an ice cave or blue ice feature on Breiðamerkurjökull, helmet and spikes included.
