People are often surprised by the distance. On a map of Iceland the lagoon looks like a short hop along the south coast; on the road it is the far end of the South Coast, past Vík, past the black sand plains and past Skaftafell. A day trip from the capital runs 14 to 15 hours, and that is with someone else driving.
It is still the trip many visitors rate as the best day of their holiday. This guide sets out the options plainly: the distance and times, the day tours and which of them put you on a boat, the case for a night in the south, what the drive is like if you do it yourself, and the stops worth getting out for.
The quick answer
Jökulsárlón is about 370 km from Reykjavík, 4.5 to 5 hours each way on Route 1 without stops. Day tours take 14 to 15 hours and give you about 1 to 1.5 hours at the lagoon and Diamond Beach; only one of them has the boat ticket in the price, the others sell it as an option in season. A two-day tour or your own car with a night near Vík or Skaftafell gives you a calmer pace.
How far is Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon from Reykjavík?
About 370 km (230 miles) east along Route 1, the Ring Road. Plan on 4.5 to 5 hours each way without stops in good conditions.
The lagoon's boat operator, Jökulsárlón ehf (Glacier Lagoon), gives about 370 km. Driving times vary by source: the Fjallsárlón operator, 10 minutes west of the lagoon, says 4.5 hours from Reykjavík, and Guide to Iceland says about 5. Add your stops, the weather and any roadworks, and a one-way drive easily fills six hours.
One mix-up worth clearing up: Jökulsárlón is not the Blue Lagoon. The Blue Lagoon is on the Reykjanes Peninsula, about 50 minutes from downtown Reykjavík, on the other side of the country from the icebergs.
| From | To Jökulsárlón | Drive without stops |
|---|---|---|
| Reykjavík | About 370 km | 4.5 to 5 hours |
| Vík | About 190 km | About 2.5 hours |
| Skaftafell | About 60 km | About 45 minutes |
| Fjallsárlón | About 10 km | About 10 minutes |
| Höfn | About 80 km | About 1 hour |
How do I get to Jökulsárlón from Reykjavík?
By day tour from Reykjavík, on a two-day tour with a night in the south, in your own car on Route 1, or on Strætó's route 52 bus, which runs four days a week.
There is no train and no short flight that drops you at the lagoon, so it comes down to who drives. Each option suits a different traveller:
| Option | Time | Boat on the lagoon | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day tour by bus | 14 hours | Optional, add it when you book (in season) | One long day, pickup as an option |
| Day tour with the boat | 14 hours | 30-minute boat ride included | The boat settled before you leave |
| Two-day tour | 2 days | Amphibian boat as an option | Less time on the bus per day |
| Your own car | 4.5 to 5 hours each way | Buy at the lagoon or from the operator | Your own stops and pace |
| Strætó route 52 | Check straeto.is | Buy at the lagoon or from the operator | Travellers without a car |
Strætó, the public bus company, says route 52 runs between Reykjavík and Höfn on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays from 1 January 2026, and Guide to Iceland lists a stop at Jökulsárlón. Check the timetable on straeto.is before you plan around it. Arriving by ship? The shore excursion from Djúpivogur is timed to your ship.
Can you do Jökulsárlón as a day trip from Reykjavík?
Yes, and thousands of people do. Expect 14 to 15 hours door to door, with about 1 to 1.5 hours at the lagoon and Diamond Beach together.
The best-known day tour leaves in the morning, stops at Hvolsvöllur for a break, has lunch at Kirkjubæjarklaustur, then gives you 1.5 hours at Jökulsárlón including Diamond Beach. On the way back you eat in Vík and stop at Seljalandsfoss. That is the listing's own plan for the Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach day tour, which holds 4.7 out of 5 from more than 4,000 reviews and starts from $213.
The reviews are honest about the length and still mostly glowing. Charlotte, in October: "diamond beach being the highlight! A long day but definitely glad we did it!" A few practical points make the day easier:
- Food is not included. The stops are timed for meals you buy; bring snacks for the bus.
- Age: not for children under 6 on this tour and the boat-included one.
- Pickup: hotel pickup is a booking option on this tour; the 95187 day trip uses bus stops only.
- Weather: the operator says the day can run long in bad weather. Do not book a late dinner or an early flight next morning.

Fourteen hours from Reykjavík: the iceberg lagoon, Diamond Beach and Seljalandsfoss, with the boat ride as an option in season.
Explore the Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach day tour Tour detailsWhich day tours from Reykjavík include the boat ride?
Only one has the boat ticket in the price: the Glacier Lagoon boat ride day tour, with a 30-minute ride. On the others the boat is an option you add, or you pay for it at the lagoon.
The amphibian and Zodiac boats on Jökulsárlón belong to the lagoon's own operator, Jökulsárlón ehf, which sells its tickets at the lagoon and on its own site, not on GetYourGuide. The day tours either buy the ticket for you or leave room for it. Read the inclusions closely, because the titles do not always tell you:
| Day tour | Boat on Jökulsárlón | Pickup | From (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boat ride and Diamond Beach | 30-minute boat ride included | Hotel pickup | $294 |
| Lagoon and Diamond Beach | Boat tour if that option is booked | Hotel pickup as an option | $213 |
| Day trip with boat option | 40-minute boat cruise, optional, extra fee | Bus stops, no hotel pickup | $236 |
| Small group and canyon | Amphibian boat at additional cost | Hotels and bus stops | $229 |
| Two-day South Coast | Amphibious boat if that option is booked | Pickup in Reykjavík | $599 |
Season matters more than the listing. The operator's 2026 schedule runs the amphibian boat from May to about mid-November and the Zodiac from May to the end of October, weather and ice permitting, and either can be cancelled on the day for wind or ice (with a full refund from the operator). Outside those months a day tour still goes; you see the lagoon from the shore. Our amphibian or Zodiac guide explains the two boats.
The one day tour from Reykjavík with the 30-minute boat ride on the lagoon already in the price, plus Diamond Beach.
Check dates for the day tour with the boat ride includedIs it better to spend a night near Jökulsárlón?
If you have the time, yes. Two days halves the time on the bus each day and gives you longer at the stops.
The arithmetic is simple: 9 to 10 hours of driving in one day leaves little for the places themselves. Spread over two days, the same road turns into a trip. The two-day tour with icebergs, glaciers and waterfalls picks you up in Reykjavík, puts you in a double or twin room with breakfast in the south, and offers a glacier hike and the amphibian boat as options. It holds 4.9 out of 5 and starts from $599. Lunch and dinner are extra, at scheduled stops, and the minimum age is 10.
Katherine, in September, called it "A great way to see the beauty of Iceland without renting a car" and added that "the second day is especially long in the car on the way back". That is the honest shape of it: the second day still covers the long road home.
Driving yourself, the natural overnight stops are Vík (about 2.5 hours from the lagoon), the Skaftafell area (about 45 minutes) or Höfn (about an hour east). You cannot stay overnight at the lagoon itself: camping is not permitted in this part of the national park.

Two days on the South Coast with pickup, a night in the south and breakfast, and the amphibian boat on Jökulsárlón as an option.
Explore the two-day South Coast tour Tour detailsWhat is the drive from Reykjavík to Jökulsárlón like?
One road almost all the way, with one-lane bridges in the south-east and serious wind on some days. Check road.is, vedur.is and safetravel.is the morning you go.
From Reykjavík you follow Route 1 east through Selfoss, Hella and Hvolsvöllur, past Vík and across the black sand plains to Skaftafell; the lagoon is right beside the road about 45 minutes further on. Route 1 crosses the Jökulsá river on a bridge between the lagoon and Diamond Beach, with car parks on both sides.
- One-lane bridges: the Government of Iceland said in June 2026 that 26 remain on the Ring Road, after a new section near Höfn removed three. Slow down and give way to a car already on the bridge.
- Wind: on 29 October 2026, for example, Safetravel warned of gusts up to 30 m/s between Reykjavík and Vík and told drivers to adjust their plans.
- Fuel: Guide to Iceland notes there is no petrol station at the lagoon; fill up on the way.
- Parking: 1,110 ISK per car (2026), the national park's fee, paid through the Parka app or the machines and valid until midnight that day. Fjallsárlón's car park is free.
- Emergencies: 112. The national park also recommends leaving a travel plan on safetravel.is.
In winter, road conditions can change within hours. If you do not want to drive that stretch in the dark, that is a good reason to take a tour; our winter guide goes into it.

What are the best stops between Reykjavík and Jökulsárlón?
Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss on the first stretch, Vík and its sea stacks halfway, then Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon in summer, Skaftafell and Fjallsárlón near the end.
Seljalandsfoss is the waterfall with a path behind the curtain of water, conditions permitting. Skógafoss, a little further east, drops about 60 m, and on a bright day the spray throws a rainbow. Both sit right by Route 1. Vík is Iceland's southernmost village, with the Reynisdrangar sea stacks offshore; if you walk down to the black beach at Reynisfjara, Safetravel's advice is to stay well back from the water and never turn your back on the sea.
East of Vík, Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon is on the small-group day tour in summer when conditions allow, and Kirkjubæjarklaustur is the usual lunch stop. Near the end, Skaftafell is where the blue ice glacier hike starts, and Fjallsárlón, 10 km before Jökulsárlón, is the quieter lagoon with its own boats; our two-lagoon comparison helps you pick.
A self-drive outline that works over two days:
| Day | Route | Stops |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Reykjavík to Vík, about 187 km | Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara from a safe distance, night in Vík |
| 2 | Vík to Jökulsárlón, about 190 km | Fjaðrárgljúfur (summer), Skaftafell, Fjallsárlón, Jökulsárlón, Diamond Beach |
| 3 | Back west, or on to Höfn | A boat on the lagoon in season, an ice cave in winter |

How long should you spend at Jökulsárlón?
At least 2 hours for the lagoon and Diamond Beach, and half a day if you add the Zodiac. Day tours give you about 1 to 1.5 hours.
The amphibian boat takes 30 to 40 minutes on the water and the Zodiac about 1 hour 15, plus 30 minutes to check in, per the operator. Diamond Beach is about 500 m away, a few minutes' walk on the path under the bridge, and most people want at least half an hour there. Guide to Iceland puts a typical visit at 1 to 2 hours, or 3 to 4 with a boat tour and the beach.
On a day tour you live with the listing's timing: 1.5 hours at the lagoon on the 67020 and 95187 trips, and 1 hour plus 30 minutes at Diamond Beach on the boat-included tour. Several reviews mention a rushed pace, and that is the trade for doing it in a day. Driving yourself, add the kayak tour on the lagoon (1.5 hours, from age 14, swimmers only) or the Skaftafell glacier hike (4 hours, from age 8) and stay the night.
For what to do on the beach itself, see our Diamond Beach guide.
A guided blue ice hike on Falljökull from the Skaftafell base camp, about 45 minutes west of the lagoon: crampons, axe and helmet included.
